Cozy Food

Happy Tuesday!!Alright foodies you will love this post today! 128 fabulous cozy mystery writers share there favorite recipes! Filled with great recipes the authors love now you can love them too.

Book Description

 May 20, 2014
What happens when 128 cozy mystery writers get together to do a cookbook? You get more than 220 recipes that are as varied and interesting as an amateur sleuth’s day job.

Regional recipes come from every part of the United States and England — a couple find their way from Australia and Italy, too — and from diverse times. There are recipes from people looking to keep gluten out of their lives, eat vegetarian, or make a treat or two for their furry four-legged friends. And yes, there are recipes that appeal to the sweet tooth, lots of them, in fact.

There’s no mystery about what happens when cozy writers get together. They bring the wit, inventiveness, and adventure found in their books right along with their recipes.

The recipes are introduced by their authors and linked to the writer bios in the back of the book.
You can look up your favorite cozy writer and see which recipes are their favorites; they'll tell you what the recipe means to them. Or you can enjoy a dish and then link to the recipe's author's biography and books.

Either way you enjoy the cookbook, you're sure to find great new recipes to make and terrific new cozy authors to read.

Guest Post- Beverly Allen

I am so thrilled to have the wonderful Beverly Allen here today! So grab your favorite summer drink and join us!!

Welcome Beverly, it is great to have you with us today!

Beverly Allen’s Summer Bucket List
When Shelley asked me for a guest post, I asked her if she wanted anything in particular. She said maybe something summery. Well, this summer has been a little hampered by a busy schedule: I barely recovered from my daughter’s wedding before being confronted by two simultaneous deadlines ---including the galleys for For Whom the Bluebell Tolls (http://www.amazon.com/Bluebell-Tolls-Bridal-Bouquet-Mystery/dp/042526498X/ref=tmm_mmp_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1406464356&sr=8-1) and a doozy of a summer cold.
But our glorious summer is the season that makes Buffalo, NY a suitable place to live, so here’s my summer bucket list: those things I must do to ensure that I feel that I’ve not missed the season completely.
Sweet Corn: Grilled or boiled, sweet corn is one of the joys of summer. For the treat of a lifetime, if you can grow it or find it at a nice farm stand, cook it the same day it was picked; it’s almost heaven.
Shakespeare in Delaware Park: (http://shakespeareindelawarepark.org/) This is a twice-in-the-summer event for us. Each year the troupe puts on two of the bard’s plays, generally a historical and a comedy, but sometimes with a unique twist--contemporary settings, an all male (or female cast), and occasionally even as a musical. We bring a picnic and snacks so we can get our lawn chairs on the hill early. It’s free (although donations are happily collected at intermission). Lovely, historic park.
Lake Ontario (and Byes Popcorn): On a hot day, shady Krull Park (http://www.niagaracounty.com/parks/KrullPark.aspx) on the shores of Lake Ontario is heaven. We grab a bench facing the lake--or bring our own lawn chairs or blankets and stretch out with a good
book. The lake cools the air: nature’s air conditioning. On the way is a required stop at a local roadside popcorn stand that has been in operation since 1923. (http://www.yelp.com/biz/byes-popcorn-olcott)
Erie County Fair: Leave it to an area starved for summer to have the third largest county fair in the country. The fair has been going strong now for 175 years, and is a tradition worth continuing. Yes, there’s exhibits, contests, shows, but there’s also fair food. Favorite last year: red velvet funnel cake with cream cheese icing. Also high marks for the maple exhibit (maple butter, maple cotton candy).Yum! (https://www.ecfair.org/)
Perry’s Ice Cream: Made locally in Western NY, Perry’s, whether in cartons from the grocery store, or frozen custard, or specialty flavors sold only in many of the area’s ice cream stands, Perry’s is one of the flavors of summer. (http://www.perrysicecream.com/find-your-flavor-match/)
Niagara River (Old Man River and Mississippi Muds): One of the secrets of Western New York is the amount of water in the area. Along the shores of the Niagara River, in Tonawanda, NY, are two hot dog stands that are a summer staple. Get the Sahlen’s hot dog, the sweet potato fries (with honey and butter), and finish with ice cream at Mississippi Muds (Perry’s of course, in a waffle cone made fresh on the premises.) All with a view of the river.
Deck time: After being stuck inside all year, any temperate day might find me on my deck. I’ve even been known to camp out there with my laptop when on deadline.
S’mores: No better way to end a summer’s day than with a fire--once the air has cooled down, that is. Haven’t managed a s’more yet this summer. It’s either been too hot, too cold, or too wet. One s’more is really all the chocolate I want, but if you don’t take the bag of marshmallows away from me,
I’ll toast them all night. Did you know that marshmallows are only 25 calories each? Yeah, pure sugar, but one of the joys of summer.
What’s on your summer bucket list?
Bio: Barbara Early, who writes as Beverly Allen, grew up buried in the snowy suburbs of Buffalo, NY, where she developed a love for all things sedentary: reading, writing, classic movies, and Scrabble. She holds a degree in engineering, but her creative streak caused her to run away screaming from the pocket-protector set.  When not reading or writing, she enjoys cooking, crafts, home-improvement projects, and spending time with her husband, daughter, and four naughty, but adorable cats.
She cooks up cozy mysteries with a healthy dose of comedy and sometimes a splash of romance. Bloom and Doom, the first book in the Bridal Bouquet Shop Mystery series, released from Berkley Prime Crime in April and was her debut novel. The second in the series, For Whom the Bluebell Tolls, is scheduled for release in January, 2015.

Pies and Peril by Janel Gradowski

It is a pleasure to have with us today the Delightful Janel Gradowski!! Her new book Pies and Peril is out and it was a great read for foodies everywhere!

Pies & Peril (A Culinary Competition Mystery)

Book Description

 July 4, 2014
"Janel Gradowski may be a debut author, but her style is more seasoned than a pumpkin pie! This is one book that will leave you hungry for more."
~Gemma Halliday, New York Times bestselling mystery author

When Amy Ridley decided to compete in the Kellerton Summer Festival Pie Contest, the last thing she expected was to find the reigning pie queen, Mandy Jo, dead—a raspberry pie smashed on her face! Mandy Jo made fantastic pies, but she accumulated more enemies than baking trophies. But when Amy receives a note threatening her own life, she decides to do some investigating herself.

It seems that half the town has a reason to kill the mean pie queen, and Amy finds herself sifting through a list of suspects that's longer than her list of recipes. Not to mention playing cupid for her love-shy best friend, fending off a baker intent on finding out her prize-winning culinary secrets, and ducking the deadly attentions of Mandy Jo's killer. If Amy doesn't find out who wanted the pie queen dead soon, her own goose may be cooked!

**Recipes included!**

my review:

Amy Ridley will warm her way into your heart and fill your stomach in the process. With humor and wit this delicious whodunit will keep you foodies reading and solving the murder until the end. You will not want to put this one down!! I enjoyed this book very much and was glad to be asked to review it.

Janel Gradowski lives in a land that looks like a cold weather fashion accessory, the mitten-shaped state of Michigan. She is a wife and mom to two kids and one Golden Retriever. Her journey to becoming an author is littered with odd jobs like renting apartments to college students and programming commercials for an AM radio station. Somewhere along the way she also became a beadwork designer and teacher. She enjoys cooking recipes found in her formidable cookbook and culinary fiction collection. Searching for unique treasures at art fairs, flea markets and thrift stores is also a favorite pastime. Coffee is an essential part of her life. She writes the Culinary Competition Mystery Series, along with The Bartonville Series (women’s fiction) and the 6:1 Series (flash fiction). She has also had many short stories published in both online and print publications.

Synopsis
During Prohibition, Galveston Island was called the “Free State of Galveston” due to its lax laws and laissez-faire attitude toward gambling, gals and bootlegging. Young society reporter Jasmine (Jazz) Cross longs to cover hard news, but she’s stuck between two clashing cultures: the world of gossip and glamour vs. gangsters and gamblers.
After Downtown Gang leader Johnny Jack Nounes is released from jail, all hell breaks loose: Prohibition Agent James Burton’s life is threatened and he must go into hiding for his own safety. But when he’s framed for murder, he and Jazz work together to prove his innocence. Johnny Jack blames her half-brother Sammy Cook, owner of the Oasis speakeasy, for his arrest and forces him to work overtime in a variety of dangerous mob jobs as punishment.
When a bookie is murdered, Jazz looks for clues linking the two murders and delves deeper into the underworld of gambling: poker games, slot machines and horse-racing. Meanwhile, Jazz tries to keep both Burton and her brother safe, and alive, while they face off against each other, as well as a common enemy. A soft-boiled mystery inspired by actual events.
my review:
I enjoyed reading this series and being a fan of the 20's made it all the better.Although I haven't read the first two, I found this book to be a clever whodunit.  This book had the right atmosphere and brought you back to a time when gangsters where big. You will step back into the 20's with this classy  novel of suspense and mystery and romance you will get hooked from the start and read till the very end!

Ellen picture deco croppedAbout The Author
Ellen Mansoor Collier is a Houston-based freelance magazine writer and editor whose articles and essays have been published in a variety of national magazines. Several of her short stories have appeared in Woman’s World. During college summers, she worked as a reporter for a Houston community newspaper and as a cocktail waitress, both jobs providing background experience for her Jazz Age mysteries.
A flapper at heart, she’s worked as a magazine editor/writer, and in advertising and public relations (plus endured a hectic semester as a substitute teacher). She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Magazine Journalism and served on UTmost, the college magazine and as president of WICI (Women in Communications).
FLAPPERS, FLASKS AND FOUL PLAY is her first novel, published in 2012, followed by the sequel, BATHING BEAUTIES, BOOZE AND BULLETS, released in May 2013. She lives in Houston with her husband and Chow mutts, and visits Galveston whenever possible.
“When you grow up in Houston, Galveston becomes like a second home. I had no idea this sleepy beach town had such a wild and colorful past until I began doing research, and became fascinated by the legends and stories of the 1920s. Finally I had to stop researching and start writing, trying to imagine a flapper’s life in Galveston during Prohibition.”

Guest Post- Laurie Cass

I am so pleased to have Laurie Cass with us today!  If you haven't read her books, you are missing out on a fantastic series!!

A Day in the Life of Laurie Cass

Truly? You want to know what my normal day is like? Huh. It would be a lot more fun if I could write about what I’d like my normal day to be – which would start out with me awakening to sunshine streaming in my bedroom window – but since you’ve asked me for a normal day, well, that goes about like this:

5:45 – The alarm goes off. It’s still dark out, but I drag myself out of bed anyway and get in a half hour workout. Sweaty and wide awake, I shower and have a breakfast of oatmeal with my husband. (The cats, Eddie and his sidekick, get tiny bowls of milk.)

7:10 – Already five minutes late, according to my husband, we get into separate cars for our morning commutes. Since my official workday doesn’t start until 8:30 and my commute is barely fifteen minutes, I have a little slot of time to write. I stop the car at a small township park and get busy. This half hour or so is often very productive, writing-wise, and maybe someday I’ll ask the township if I can put up a plaque commemorating the spot where I wrote a large portion of the bookmobile cat books.

8:00ish – I find a spot in the parking lot, go for a short walk to stretch my legs, then get started at my day job, associate planner for my county.

12:30ish – Lunchtime. I snarf down my food while I check my author email and Facebook pages, then take my laptop and find a good place to write. If it’s warm enough, I write outside. If it’s cool or rainy, I’ll drive to a city park and write. If, like it was a large share of last winter, it’s freaking cold and snowy, I’ll wander to a back hallway, sit on the floor, and hope no one asks me what I’m doing. I also try to get out for a short walk at some point during this time. It turns out that sitting in front of a computer for ten to twelve hours a day isn’t the best thing for the human body. Go figure.

5:45ish – I return home. I’m often met by Eddie, who sometimes pauses to say hello in his rush to get outside as soon as I open the door. After I divest myself of coat and briefcase, I greet my husband and head upstairs to change from office clothes to real clothes. We start dinner preparations and when the food is gone and the dishes are done, I do a household chore or two, and then get back to writing. If my morning and lunchtime writing sessions were productive, writing might take only half an hour and then I’ll be free to play the piano, weed the garden, or go for a walk with my husband. If I’m behind in my writing schedule, I’m at the computer the bulk of the evening.

10:00 – this is our official bedtime. Teeth are brushed, jammies are on, and we head to bed. I read, my husband works on a crossword puzzle, and Eddie jumps up for a snuggle.

About 10:20 – my husband says, “It’s late. Put your book down.” I realize he’s said this at least three times, and that I’ve fallen asleep over the book I was reading. But I make a valiant effort to wake up and finish the chapter.

10:30 – When my book drops onto my face for the umpteenth time, I accept the inevitable. Book goes down, glasses are put on the nightstand, and the light goes off. I curl up to my husband, reach out a hand to find out if Eddie is still with us, find his furry self, and fall asleep to the comfort of his purrs.

Bio

Laurie Cass grew up in Michigan and graduated from Eastern Michigan University in the 80’s with a (mostly unused) Bachelor of Science degree in geology. Currently, Laurie and her husband share their house with two cats, the inestimable Eddie, and the adorably cute Sinii. When Laurie isn’t writing, she’s working at her day job, reading, yanking weeds out of her garden, or doing some variety of skiing.
