You know, I never used to be afraid of flying, but I swear, turbulence has gotten worse over the last ten years and planes are getting older and creakier. I am less adventurous as far as air travel than I used to be and when I fly, I want a big, newer plane. I want a tank. Not a cigar tube, thank you very much. Not that the roads are much better. If I had all the time in the world, I'd go everywhere by train. We left late & it was the middle of the night & we had to be there early the next morning to close on our house. I was driving our Jeep with 2 dogs in it. I was following my husband in the big Uhaul & he had our 2 cats crated in it. All of a sudden the oil light came on. We were in a rural area & had to find a place that sold oil. After that we couldn't get the cap off. It was stuck. Had to call Uhaul roadside assistance & finally got the stupid thing off. Someone didn't check the oil. It was low. We wasted several hours & were barely there in time to drop animals & the truck off at my parents & get to the closing dressed horribly from the night before. I'll never move again. I guess the most odd is that I worked for the airlines myself, flew to Charlotte (nonstop) and no one could find my bag until the day I was leaving. I was there for training in customer service and ways to provide better service. My bag had actually been held for me in some training center even though our training was at a hotel. I quickly grabbed it and tried to hold it closed as I lifted it. The luggage handlers must have thrown it so hard on the belt that the zipper came apart. Two things you could always count on was lack of places to eat and restrooms. I used many outhouses behind small churches. We had a station wagon that was donned the QE3 because it was so big. Nothing like trying to do a u-turn and find yourself stuck in a ditch and blocking the road. Thankfully a man with a large pickup with a winch on it came to the rescue. Never even questioned why he had a winch on his truck.Liz Strawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12981072108931064506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4175574572567889638.post-33554223484775003552015-10-22T13:19:44.900-04:002015-10-22T13:19:44.900-04:00My husband, Jack, and I traveled from California t...My husband, Jack, and I traveled from California to Kauai for a 6-week vacation. Our previously arranged 4:30 am shuttle did not show, so we drove (in horrid traffic) to the airport. We arrived at the departure gate with no time to spare only to find that the 9 am flight departure had been delayed due to computer problems. (Saved by technology.) We arrived in Honolulu for our connecting flight to Kauai only to discover that one of our friends had made "stand-by" flight arrangements (this was a holiday weekend). We went on to Kauai then sat at the airport until 9pm waiting for over the Wailua River bridge and then started looking for the house we rented for our stay. The location of the house was stated as "the first house on the ocean side after the 8 mile marker." Yes, we did arrive at the house eventually; however, all of us in the car were silent, beyond exhausted and not really sure "where" we arrived, Ultimately, the trip was a wonderful and memorable one. irishteacup@juno.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4175574572567889638.post-78526986102400503612015-10-22T12:43:54.815-04:002015-10-22T12:43:54.815-04:00Oh, here's my email: csolinda@hotmail.com :...Oh, here's my email: csolinda@hotmail.com :)Linda McDonaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14696725014931280501noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4175574572567889638.post-43661493690460449682015-10-22T12:40:02.193-04:002015-10-22T12:40:02.193-04:00I was teaching electronics in Saudi Arabia a numbe...I was teaching electronics in Saudi Arabia a number of years ago, but was there on a Visitors Visa, rather than a Business Visa. As a result, I had to leave the country every 90 days to renew my visa. The first time this happened, we were in a travel office in Taif, Saudi Arabia looking at options. The company I was working for saw that I could get a Saudi Visa in Athens, Greece A) if I was a Greek National (I am a US Citizen) or B) If I was a non-Greek working in Greece (I was currently in Saudi Arabia). Nonetheless, they sent me to Athens to renew the Visa and I had a 9-day vacation in Athens while they found out that I still had to return to the US to renew the Visa. Makes you wonder what they were thinking, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. j.presler@yahoo.comJohn P.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4175574572567889638.post-74673358702009652682015-10-22T12:38:32.984-04:002015-10-22T12:38:32.984-04:00We took a boat ride over to a tiny island off of A...We took a boat ride over to a tiny island off of Acapulco, Mexico. It was supposed to have a nice beach, a trail to take to a lighthouse, snorkeling, and a zoo. When we got there, nobody else on the boat got off, except for us. The only people we saw on the island were three guys dressed in full camouflage with large guns. The snorkeling/beach area had lots of chairs, but no people. Never found the lighthouse, and the zoo must have only consisted of the burro that followed us, and the pack of six wild dogs that charged us. (I'm not kidding). Fortunately, the boat came back to get us. Oh, and on our boat ride over, I got stung by some type of sea anemone that was passed around by a member of the crew. He was a Navy submariner, and not yet married with a family, so we were able to do a lot of traveling - which I enjoyed immensely. We were in DC and visiting the Lincoln memorial. We were parked along with a LOT of other cars along the road. Apparently, it was a No Parking area and my brother noticed police going along the row of cars, writing tickets. He made a quick decision to move the car, so he jumped off the monument and ran for the car. He got there in time and I saw him drive away - across the bridge toward Arlington. And I waited, and waited, and waited. That was before cell phones, and I was alone in a place I didn't know. Turns out he had trouble finding a way back. The road he had been on was one-way, and he was not familiar with the area. He did eventually make it back, but I was a wreck. Then, as we were heading home, my glasses broke. I am legally blind without my glasses. He stopped at a friends to see if they could patch them enough to get by. He had them in his pocket when he got out and started across the street to his friends house. It was almost dark and I panicked because I couldn't see well enough to follow. He eventually heard my pitiful voice calling and came back to get me. The next day he took my glasses to the base with him to get them repaired and sat in a chair all day, staring at nothing, waiting for him to return. He did get them fixed, but now I keep a spare pair of glasses with me at all times. I don't think I have ever had a trip where I felt so helpless at times. There were tornados and strong storms, there was a power outage for about 250 miles and we couldn't get gas. We finally decided to get off and sleep and the power was off for the next 6 exits and we had to drive forever off the interstate looking for a hotel. We ended up sleeping in the ghetto-est hotel ever. Then my mom had a stomach bug when she got up the next morning and we had to keep stopping for her to vomit. Then I noticed a horrible rash on my 1 year old, she had a 103 fever and cried for HOURS. We found out after we got to NC that she had Roseola. It was a MESS. it was fun once we got there though. On the way to the mountains of western VA, with three dogs in the vehicle, I stopped at a rest area to get something out of my trunk. Since it was hot, I left the car running (A/C on), pushed the button to pop the trunk and got out. Then, one of the dogs stepped on the door lock and locked me out! My husband, following in his vehicle, didn't have a key to my car. I was ready to break a window, when an elderly couple pulled up. The gentleman had a wire coat hanger and my husband was able to use it to unlock the door. Never, ever, will I make that mistake again!!
