Guest Post- Ellery Adams

I am delighted to have Ellery Adams with us today. Ellery is the author of The Books by the Bay Mystery series, The Book Retreat Mystery series and the Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery series.

In Writing All Wrongs, the 7th Books By the Bay mystery, it seems as though Olivia Limoges might finally be headed for her happy ending.

In the previous installment, Lethal Letters, readers attended Olivia’s wedding and many feared this event marked the end of her story, but Olivia has much more to learn and many more journeys to take. Even though she said, “I do,” she still isn’t accustomed to sharing her home, her space, or her heart with another person, and when Writing All Wrongs opens, it’s clear that there is trouble in paradise.

Paradise in Writing All Wrongs isn’t just Oyster Bay, North Carolina either. Olivia and Rawlings choose to honeymoon on Palmetto Island—the site of North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse and the setting of the Legends of Coastal Carolina Festival. The festival features authors, storytellers, and pirate reenactments. There arefeasts of fresh seafood and barbeque, golf cart decorating contests, midnight walks under a canopy of live oaks, and ghost stories told around bonfires on the beach.

Unfortunately, someone else on Palmetto Island decides to bring these legendary tales of the coast to life. And one can’t have a ghost story without a ghost. Or a dead body. Which means that the Bayside Book Writers must once again pick up their their pens and notebooks and use their sharp wits to figure out what could possibly motivate a killer to murder in the name of fiction.

Time is running out too, because this killer is going to follow them home to Oyster Bay—to Millay’s inaugural book signing. Someone’s tale is about to end in violence…

Giveaway: In many ways, this book delves into what happens when people are made to feel invisible. On a lighter note, it also explores a range a travel mishaps. For a chance to win a lighthouse teapot for one from Carter’s of Suffolk in the UK, share a travel mishap of yours or why you’re looking for to reading Writing All Wrongs. U.S. entries only please. Winner will be chosen on October 24th and will have three days to respond.

  1. I traveled to Eygpt, a life-long dream achieved, but after eating a bad shrimp, I was stricken with "mummy tummy." This may have been a terrible travel mishap, I learned that people are wonderful. It was a horrible night, but new travel mates stepped up. They haloed me pack for the next travel leg, took care of closing out my hotel account, and got me to the bus. They were all wonderful. I survived, and didn't miss a thing. kat8762@aol.com

  2. I was driving to a location not known to me, my copilot , who knew where we were going, fell asleep and I drove an hour past the turn off. So we had lunch and finally made it. Not my fault.....

  3. My family visits a lot of baseball parks during the baseball season. This is lots of fun, although I have to use a wheelchair when we go. It is amazing the number of times I have almost picked up an unexpected passenger all because they were walking either looking at their phones, texting or just no paying attention. It is like I am an invisible person, although I have someone usually pushing me. robeader53@yahoo.com

  4. I am excited to read the new book, I've enjoyed them from the start and love how Olivia has grown into such a wonderful character.
Luckily, I haven't had any travel mishaps to speak of! We usually drive places, so there is less room for problems and certainly easier to fix, if so! Thanks!

  6. On our honeymoon my husband and I were trapped in a glass front elevator in the Skyline Tower. I'm scared of heights , but he talked me into going any way. I was scared witless the whole time . After an hour we were finally rescued. needless to say I made him miserable for 2 days. He's never tried to talk me into facing my fears again. We have been married for 28 years, I guess I forgave him. Lol

  8. Can't wait to read it. As for traveling mishaps we really haven't had any except the occasional flat tire, though my Aunt once drove off and left my Granddad at a gas station and was about 20miles away when she realized it and had to go back and get him. She never has lived that one down.

  9. I am terrified of flying in a plane. We were moving to Florida and I had an interview that I needed to get to. Unfortunately the only flight we got had a two hour layover. I got off the first plane and headed straight for the bar. Needless to say I had a few to many and we were late catching are connecting flight. The plane had already started pulling away when we finally got to it. The pilot backed up and let us board. I only flew once after that this girl likes to drive!

  10. This wasn't a travel mishap, per se, but 14 years ago I moved from TX back to WNY. My friend and his bride drove my U-Haul truck and I was in my little Geo Prizm with 2 big dogs, 2 cats, and 2 travel cages with my 8 rats. Seneca, one of the cats, cried nonstop while we were in the car...for 3 days! Fortunately, the dogs enjoyed the ride and the rats didn't care. Aleister, the other cat, was silent the whole way. (He's still with me today and is 17 years old!)

  11. I can't believe that it's the 7th book! About 20 years ago I drove to VT from WA state in a 24' box truck with a car carrier on the back. My parrot, Asia, rode shotgun for this trip. She was an entertaining, if greedy, traveling companion, zipping to the side of the cage to see what it was I'd brought back at every stop I made whether it was fuel for the truck or for us and the only thing I found that she didn't appreciate was noodles from chicken noodle soup (she loves all other pasta!) She was also not amused by the giant windshield wipers on the truck and to the day if I say "wipers" to her she will look at the bottom of her cage. I can't begin to tell you how much fun is was to clean the inside of the truck of seed hulls and bits before I returned it. Oh, and if I say the word "shift" to her she will grab the sides of the cage because going over the Rockies the granny gear in the truck was so strong that when it downshifted she was almost knocked off of her perch so I spent the entire trip up the western side of the Rockies watching the speedometer for the speed which would make the downshift happen. Not a trip I'd leap to make again, but I'm glad that we made it.

  14. When we lived in Alaska often when we flew back to Ohio to visit family I would come ahead due to his work schedule. I was flying home 2 days before my husband and I was traveling with our infant son (all his stuff including his car seat for the plane) and our dog. I flew out of Anchorage into Salt Lake and from there was to fly to Dayton. When I got to Salt lake they discovered a screw up in my ticket that didn't have my son and I flying out until 2 days later when my husband was flying. They finally got me a flight to Dayton via Atlanta. We got to Atlanta and couldn't fly out due to the weather. It finally let up but then there were some mechanical issue that delayed it farther. Then we had to wait for them to find a pilot. We finally got to Dayton but many many hours after we were scheduled. Luckily I always packed way more than needed in the diaper bag and our dog had arrived either ahead or with us because she was waiting on us when we picked up our luggage. I have hated to fly since then.

  16. The girls were young and we lived in Ca. On our way up the mountain to Big Bear our Pontiac broke down, transmission probs. Thank God it was summer and we were at a spot where we got out and sat under the trees. My hubby called AAA and they wanted to know our location, "on the side of the mountain" said my hubby. There were no mile markers so they had to decide whether to send a tow truck from the bottom or top of the mountain. It was our first time riding in the cab of a tow truck. The only rental car we could get reaked of smoke. A vacation we will never forget!

  17. We would travel 12 hours to North Carolina and after stopping at a rest stop I came out and tried to get into the wrong car. My husband and son were in the car and there was a same style car with a man and child inside and I went to the wrong one! I remember wondering why my son's haur looked curly! Embarrassing!

  19. Kathleen, I cracked up when I read your "mummy tummy" line. I love that! I went to Egypt in 2002 when the travel ban was recently lifted. Some members of my family really didn't want me to go, but I have never regretted my decision. It was, hands down, the most amazing experience of my life. As a lifelong lover of all things Ancient Egypt, I was in heaven there. I found the people welcoming and warm as well. I did fine with the food, but I stayed away from the water.

  21. Weather delays can be a traveler's worst nightmares and I've been hit with bad ones twice; each time trying to get to an island off the Alaskan coast. I should have been warned the first time when they gave an announcement at the gate before boarding that said they couldn't guarantee the connection from Anchorage to the island and to be prepared for possible delays. The second time I had already arrived in Anchorage when they had to delay the flight for several hours. The hours spent wandering reading and trying to find someplace to nap were long. The bright spot is that these kinds of delays for flights connecting out of Anchorage are common and there is an immediate camaraderie among the waiters.

  25. I flew to Chicago to meet an online friend for the first time. We went on a road trip to Chicago to Atlanta. She had a new trailer on a hitch to the back of her car for how power wheelchair. But she didn't know how to back it up. We got trapped in a one way deadend in the hotel parking lot. I had to get under the car and unhitch the trailer, pull it away, turn the car and rehitch. We made it through the rest of the trip. When I flew hope, as I walked through the Philly airport, the handles on both my carry on bags broke. When my I finall made it to baggage claim where my sisters were waiting, I had both bags under my arms hanging onto to them for dear life. I had a great time, but I was exhausted by the end of the trip! The teapot is beautiful. Thank you for the chance to win. Since I was able to meet you in Suffolk, even if it was VA and not UK, this would be a lovely keepsake to have.

  26. I love your books, and I would love to win the teapot! My son and I were visiting Washington, DC a few years ago. Our first mishap began in our home airport where we were waiting by the wrong gate to board and had to run all the way across the concourse to catch our flight which was already calling final boarding. We flew to Reagan International and then set out to find the area where the shuttle vans were located which would take us to the hotel we were staying at. We found the area after quite a length of time but only after losing a heal on my boot and the handle on one of our pieces of luggage. After getting into the shuttle and arriving at the hotel, we were told we did not have any reservations but then found out we had actually taken the wrong shuttle which, of course, had taken us to the wrong hotel. So, after figuring all of this out, we were eventually checked in to the appropriate hotel and had a wonderful vacation. Dawn (hc6275@gmail.com)

  27. We were traveling in Germany when our car broke down. Had our daughter who was ten with us at the time. Had to wait for someone to come tow car and take us to pick up a new car. Daughter was not amused by waiting on road side for several hours as it was getting dark.
Then once we got new car still had to drive to hotel....got to hotel around 2 in the morning. Good thing the rest of the trip went without a problem!

  28. I couldn't find my car in the airport parking lot. I used the help phone at the shuttle shelter and someone came out and drove me around and around. I thought I had written down my location but whatever I wrote down was sooo wrong (I had been in a hurry). It took more than a half hour, but we found it ! What a panicky feeling. The driver was so calm and reassuring. She said it happens all the time, and people eventually find their car. hharra@bsu.edu

  29. Loved the post! My most recent travel mishap was this summer. On the way to the mountains of western VA, with three dogs in the vehicle, I stopped at a rest area to get something out of my trunk. Since it was hot, I left the car running (A/C on), pushed the button to pop the trunk and got out. Then, one of the dogs stepped on the door lock and locked me out! My husband, following in his vehicle, didn't have a key to my car. I was ready to break a window, when an elderly couple pulled up. The gentleman had a wire coat hanger and my husband was able to use it to unlock the door. Never, ever, will I make that mistake again!! (Don't include me in the giveaway, since I recently won a lovely teapot from Ellery. I just wanted to stop by and join in.)

  30. My husband and I were driving to Canada for a vacation and stopped late at night at a motel off the NY thruway. We went to our room and collapsed on the bed. Tired, we got up to turn back the covers and found ants all over the sheets! There was no other motel nearby, so we just changed rooms...far from that one...and slept on top of the covers. Not a great way to start a vacation.

  31. My mom, my sister, my daughters and myself were going to NC from IN if a problem was possible it happened. There were tornados and strong storms, there was a power outage for about 250 miles and we couldn't get gas. We finally decided to get off and sleep and the power was off for the next 6 exits and we had to drive forever off the interstate looking for a hotel. We ended up sleeping in the ghetto-est hotel ever. Then my mom had a stomach bug when she got up the next morning and we had to keep stopping for her to vomit. Then I noticed a horrible rash on my 1 year old, she had a 103 fever and cried for HOURS. We found out after we got to NC that she had Roseola. It was a MESS. it was fun once we got there though.

  32. I visited my brother in CT in the early 70's.. He was a Navy submariner, and not yet married with a family, so we were able to do a lot of traveling - which I enjoyed immensely. We were in DC and visiting the Lincoln memorial. We were parked along with a LOT of other cars along the road. Apparently, it was a No Parking area and my brother noticed police going along the row of cars, writing tickets. He made a quick decision to move the car, so he jumped off the monument and ran for the car. He got there in time and I saw him drive away - across the bridge toward Arlington. And I waited, and waited, and waited. That was before cell phones, and I was alone in a place I didn't know. Turns out he had trouble finding a way back. The road he had been on was one-way, and he was not familiar with the area. He did eventually make it back, but I was a wreck. Then, as we were heading home, my glasses broke. I am legally blind without my glasses. He stopped at a friends to see if they could patch them enough to get by. He had them in his pocket when he got out and started across the street to his friends house. It was almost dark and I panicked because I couldn't see well enough to follow. He eventually heard my pitiful voice calling and came back to get me. The next day he took my glasses to the base with him to get them repaired and sat in a chair all day, staring at nothing, waiting for him to return. He did get them fixed, but now I keep a spare pair of glasses with me at all times. I don't think I have ever had a trip where I felt so helpless at times.

  33. We took a boat ride over to a tiny island off of Acapulco, Mexico. It was supposed to have a nice beach, a trail to take to a lighthouse, snorkeling, and a zoo. When we got there, nobody else on the boat got off, except for us. The only people we saw on the island were three guys dressed in full camouflage with large guns. The snorkeling/beach area had lots of chairs, but no people. Never found the lighthouse, and the zoo must have only consisted of the burro that followed us, and the pack of six wild dogs that charged us. (I'm not kidding). Fortunately, the boat came back to get us. Oh, and on our boat ride over, I got stung by some type of sea anemone that was passed around by a member of the crew.

  34. I was teaching electronics in Saudi Arabia a number of years ago, but was there on a Visitors Visa, rather than a Business Visa. As a result, I had to leave the country every 90 days to renew my visa. The first time this happened, we were in a travel office in Taif, Saudi Arabia looking at options. The company I was working for saw that I could get a Saudi Visa in Athens, Greece A) if I was a Greek National (I am a US Citizen) or B) If I was a non-Greek working in Greece (I was currently in Saudi Arabia). Nonetheless, they sent me to Athens to renew the Visa and I had a 9-day vacation in Athens while they found out that I still had to return to the US to renew the Visa. Makes you wonder what they were thinking, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. j.presler@yahoo.com

  35. My husband, Jack, and I traveled from California to Kauai for a 6-week vacation. Our previously arranged 4:30 am shuttle did not show, so we drove (in horrid traffic) to the airport. We arrived at the departure gate with no time to spare only to find that the 9 am flight departure had been delayed due to computer problems. (Saved by technology.) We arrived in Honolulu for our connecting flight to Kauai only to discover that one of our friends had made "stand-by" flight arrangements (this was a holiday weekend). We went on to Kauai then sat at the airport until 9pm waiting for over the Wailua River bridge and then started looking for the house we rented for our stay. The location of the house was stated as "the first house on the ocean side after the 8 mile marker." Yes, we did arrive at the house eventually; however, all of us in the car were silent, beyond exhausted and not really sure "where" we arrived, Ultimately, the trip was a wonderful and memorable one. irishteacup@juno.com

  36. Can't wait to continue the series. I did a lot of traveling with my job, this included very rural areas of Tennessee. Two things you could always count on was lack of places to eat and restrooms. I used many outhouses behind small churches. We had a station wagon that was donned the QE3 because it was so big. Nothing like trying to do a u-turn and find yourself stuck in a ditch and blocking the road. Thankfully a man with a large pickup with a winch on it came to the rescue. Never even questioned why he had a winch on his truck.

  37. As for traveling mishaps, make sure your family and friends let you know weather-wise,storms etc before you leave home.Several years ago I flew from Washington to Texas for a visit with my Dad and Stepmother who did not tell me that there was a hurricane coming inland until after I got there and we were in their car driving away from the Houston airport!

We went around a curve in the ride, and my cigarette case flew out of my pocket and landed underneath the ride. I was so very upset that I was getting a bit hysterical, and my friend went to the help office and pleaded with them to send someone under the ride to get my cigarette case. Thank goodness they did, but I won't ever forget that travel mishap. 44. I just recently returned from a trip to Romania. When I went to baggage claim, my suitcase came down the chute, things were falling out of it. I quickly grabbed it and tried to hold it closed as I lifted it. The luggage handlers must have thrown it so hard on the belt that the zipper came apart. (I have watched the luggage handlers load luggage on planes. Some I have seen put extra force into throwing those bags on the belts.) I was very upset. The airline company gave me a new suitcase right then and there, but it was not a happy ending to a wonderful trip.

    The book sounds wonderful!

I guess the most odd is that I worked for the airlines myself, flew to Charlotte (nonstop) and no one could find my bag until the day I was leaving. 47. I don't travel enough to have many mishaps. The main one I can think of was the move my husband & I made back to MS from AR. Nothing went right from the start. We left late & it was the middle of the night & we had to be there early the next morning to close on our house. I was driving our Jeep with 2 dogs in it. I was following my husband in the big Uhaul & he had our 2 cats crated in it. All of a sudden the oil light came on. We were in a rural area & had to find a place that sold oil. After that we couldn't get the cap off. It was stuck. Had to call Uhaul roadside assistance & finally got the stupid thing off. Someone didn't check the oil. It was low. We wasted several hours & were barely there in time to drop animals & the truck off at my parents & get to the closing dressed horribly from the night before. I'll never move again.

You know, I never used to be afraid of flying, but I swear, turbulence has gotten worse over the last ten years and planes are getting older and creakier. I am less adventurous as far as air travel than I used to be and when I fly, I want a big, newer plane. I want a tank. Not a cigar tube, thank you very much. Not that the roads are much better. If I had all the time in the world, I'd go everywhere by train.
