Spend the Day with Duffy Brown

Good Morning everyone, Today we have Duffy Brown visiting with us today talking about her New Book that is released tomorrow!

Hi, Shelley.
Wonderful being here. Nothing more fun than chatting books…especially mystery books!!

      Tell us about yourself

I live in Cincy with two cats…Spooky and Dr. Watson. I named them that before I started writing mystery. A bit of karma! My license place is Sherlock. I think I need therapy! LOL

I wrote romance for 20 years that always had a bit of mystery then decided I liked writing the mystery more than the romance. I have to confess there is romance in my mysteries.

I drink waaaay too much Coke Zero…addicted to the stuff.
Love Peeps and cannot keep peanut butter in the house. I will kill the jar in one day, just hand me a spoon.

What inspired you to write Iced Chiffon?

I work in a consignment shop…the Snooty Fox. They say write what you know so I did. Savannah is one of the loveliest cities in the US and since I’m a closet belle…even have the pearls to prove it and, yes, I can twirl a baton…decided Savannah was a terrific setting. Also, Southern food is a book in itself and in Iced Chiffon we eat our way across Savannah. Can’t swing a dead cat without hitting someone eating fried chicken, pecan pie or drinking a martini. Not sure how the martinis got in there but they did! LOL

How did the hero/heroine come about?

Iced Chiffon is a first person book so we see what Reagan Summerside sees, feels, eats etc. She’s recently divorced by a scum-bucket who kicked her to the curb for the young Cupcake.

I wanted a heroine who was struggling to reinvent herself but someone smart and hard-working. Reagan is rehabbing an old Victorian herself and opening up a consignment shop to make ends meet. She gets sucked into solving murders to save her house or help a friend or her mom.

I love Reagan because she never gives up. Things don’t always go her way…heck they rarely go her way…but she keeps at it and best of all…she has a great sense of humor through it all.

What are you working on next ?

Killer in Crinolines is the second book in the Consignment Shop Mystery series. It comes out in May, 2013. I’m putting the finishing touches on that.

The mystery involves her good friend Chantilly, a UPS driver. Pearls and Poison is the third in the series and involves her mom, the judge.

Do you have a favorite author and why?

I love the Stephanie Plum series! I’ve read One for the Money so many times the pages are falling out of the book…for real. I think the series is up to nineteen now but the first three books are pure genius.

Thanks for having me, Shelley. So much fun being here. I have 4 Iced Chiffon totes to give away from the responses. Anyone wanting Iced Chiffon goodies email me at DuffyBrown@DuffyBrown.com with your snail address and I’ll send you a packet of goodies.

Have a wonderful fall.
Hugs, Duffy

  4. Here's a little excerpt you might like...where they find the body. LOL

Auntie KiKi scurried out the front door waving her hands in the air. “Where in the world have you been?” she panted, leaning in through the open car window. “When I got home, there were people waiting on your porch ready to shop! They said they got one of those tweets.” She tsked, the universal sound of exasperated Southern women everywhere. “Whatever happened to the days when you got a nice phone call from a friend telling you what was what?” she lamented. “You have customers in your dining room looking for bargains, and I have a waltz lesson in ten minutes.”
KiKi thrust a wad of bills at me. “What in the world are you doing with the Lexus?”
“I sold that fountain in the back yard to Raylene Carter for a small fortune. Now I have to deliver it as well as get the car back before Hollis knows I took it. I sort of didn’t tell him.”
“Oh, honey, Grand Theft Auto, your mamma will be so proud.”
I ignored the possibility that my scum-bucket ex would call the cops and I popped the trunk. “Take a look-see at how much room we have. Hollis stores his real estate junk in there.”
    “We?”
I grabbed my purse and rummaged for keys to the shed as I headed for the back yard. “I’ve got a cart. We can haul the fountain and--”
“Sweet Jesus in heaven! Uh, Reagan, honey,” KiKi called, her finger crooked at me in a come-here gesture. “We have junk, a great big pile of it.”
“Dump it on the lawn,” I said hurrying back to the car to help unload. “If I have to hire movers I won’t make any money and I have an electric bill due and-- Holy mother of God!” My gaze landed on Cupcake, eyes wide open, and dead as Lincoln right there in Hollis’s trunk.
KiKi and I stared, neither of us breathing. KiKi finally whispered, “She doesn’t look nearly as good in the pink chiffon as you do.”
“Maybe because she has blood in her hair and is rolled up in plastic like a hotdog in a bun.” I made the sign of the cross for disrespecting the dead.
“There is that.” KiKi sounded faint and slowly slumped to the curb. “You wouldn’t happen to have a martini in that purse of yours, would you?”
