If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter, you KNOW that I LOVE, LOVE, and LOVE my reality TV. Of course there are the naysayers that say it’s a mindless, waste of time. And that it’s not real. So….isn’t that what we all crave in a novel? NO! Not the mindless waste of time, but the escape from the real world?

As readers, we pick up the book generally based on the cover, word of mouth, or the back blurb. In a reality show, we watch a show based on the promo, which could be considered the “cover” or word of mouth from our friends that we have to watch the current train wreck of Tori Spelling.

We tune in and we watch as the plot plays out. Sometimes we roll our eyes, yell at the TV, or even walk away. This is exactly what we do with a novel. We look for that great plot, we roll our eyes, we yell at the heroine for being so stupid, and sometimes we put it down. . .but we always return.

After a good Fox Trot on Dancing With The Stars or a good brawl between any of the Real Housewives, it gives us a lot to talk to our co-workers about the next day, bringing us together. Isn’t that what you do after you have read a good book? Don’t you run to your friends and tell them they have to read it. After they read it, don’t you get together and talk about it or even meet with your book club to discuss it?

We can’t forget about the “favorites” or the ones we love to root for, AKA the Underdog. We all root for the “nerd” guy on Survivor to beat the “brawny” guy. We all root for the nice hunk hero in a romance novel, not the abusing boyfriend.

Reality TV gives us the escapism not to mention good research for a Tonya Kappes novel.
