  1. Thank you for inviting me here today, Shelley. I'm looking forward to answering questions from readers, and to getting to know Kathi and Mary Anne! We'll also be having some giveaways, so be sure to check back with us as the day progresses.

  2. My first question is for Linda Reilly. Linda, Fillet of Murder is such a fantastic book. How did you come up with this idea? Did you know someone who had a place like this? And the cat, will we see more of him in book two? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  3. My question is also for Linda Reilly. How long does it take you to write? Do you do outlines or just go with it? I also am interested in the above questions...

  4. I am always attracted to the clever covers so many cozy mysteries have! Do you, as authors, get much say in any elements that may make it to that all important place? Since I know Linda's already up, her cover comes to mind--the fish with the cat and the look on its' face--so perfect!

  5. My next question is for Kathi Daley. You write so many books with such great characters, I love them all! But how do you keep them straight? Have you ever thought about Zoe and TJ meeting? :-)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Good morning Dawn. It isn't too hard to keep the major characters straight since they are very real to me, but at times I do get mixed up with the minor or temporary characters. I'll have to stop to consider if the odd man at the mini mart was in Tj or Zoe for example. The hardest thing for me is that two of the series I write are written from a first person perspective and two are written in the third. If I have just come off a string if Zoe's and Cait's and then go to do a Tj I may find myself writing "I went to the store," rather than "Tj went to the store." It usually takes a chapter or two to get into the flow and then I will stop doing this. As for Tj and Zoe meeting I have considered this. I'd just need to decide which series to insert the other into as a visitor. It would be fun to do a two part crossover where Zoe visits Paradise Lake and the mystery is told from Tj's POV and then the mystery continues in Ashton Falls which would be told from Zoe's POV.

    2. Kathi, that would be fun! I would love for them to meet somehow.

  6. Dawn, thank you for asking! It was actually my agent who came up with the concept of a fish and chips restaurant that "morphs" into a deep-fried eatery. She told me to take it in any direction I wanted to, so I set it in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, where I was raised. I created the faux English village with the cobblestone plaza to make it appear to be "olde England." When I was a teenager, I worked one summer in the kitchen of a kitschy place called The Willows. The owner was fabulous, and so patient with me. I flipped burgers, made subs, and helped in the kitchen on smorgasboard Sundays. I loved that job, and wanted my character to have the same sweet reminiscences of her first summer job.

    1. Thanks Linda! I love the restaurant and shopping village you created. I want to go there :-) and I'm so glad we get to see Bo again!

  7. Marilyn, I work from a loose synopsis. If I didn't have that, the entire plot would flounder. I do change it (for the better, I hope), as I go along, but I need that basic game plan before I can move forward. Fillet of Murder took just under a year to write. It's surprising how having a deadline can really push you forward! Thank you for inquiring.

  8. Dawn, I forgot to say that Bo, the calico cat, will most certainly appear in book #2!

  9. I think book covers are something every author looks forward to. Berkley did ask me for suggestions, but ultimately the cover came out different from the way I thought it would be. Different, but better! I had no idea the cat would play such a prominent part in the cover! Everyone loves that cat, so I feel that the publisher knows how to do it best ~

  10. My first question is for Mary Anne Edwards, first of all I just wanted to say this book looks great! I have not read it, but from the description it sounds like a mystery book with a little bit of romance mixed in. Is it hard to try to mix in the romance while trying to keep the mystery front and center?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you! This is a great question. Yes, it is hard trying to keep just the right amount of each element. Romance, to me, is a mystery all on its own. But I the mystery is the most important element. With the two main characters, Charlie and Marian, it is easy to have the spark of romance entwined with the mystery. There is also a little "Foodie" element thrown into each of my books, Brilliant Disguise, A Good Girl, and Criminal Kind. Thank you for your question. :)

    2. Love getting to know a new author, downloaded your book. Gosh mystery, food elements and romance thrown in, couldn't ask for a more fun read.

      Delete
  11. This question is for all of the authors, what is your process? Do you figure out the mystery first, the characters first, make outlines, or don't make outlines?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's hard to describe. Honestly, I lie awake at night thinking about the characters and the setting. For me, the characters come first, but I also have a vague idea of the setting before I start working on a loose synopsis. Kind of a juggling act!

      Delete
    2. Good morning Abby. I am a total pantster. I never know who the victim or killer will be when I begin a book. I usually have a backdrop and then I start typing. For example if it is a Halloween book I'll pull up a new Word document and type Chapter 1. I will then say to myself, "It's Halloween what would be going on?" I will then put my character in a setting and start typing. I let the characters take over at this point and I just go along for the ride. Eventually the protagonist will discover a body and eventually she will begin to uncover and eliminate suspects until she figures out who did it but I usually never know until my character does. I like to write this way because it is an adventure and I never know where it will end up. Most of the time I am as surprised by the ending as anyone else.

      Delete
    3. I have a three ring binder for each of my books. I come up with the mystery first, then comes the outline, and then the characters are developed as I outline. My outlines are very rough, maybe a line or three for each chapter. But the outline will change as I write the manuscript. The characters sometimes tells me what to write. The killer always surprises me.
Thank you for your question. :)

  13. Don't really have a question. Just a comment.
I'm in awe of the authors. I just assumed that you wrote whenever you felt like it. I didn't think that writing books was a full-time occupation. I knew there would be deadlines but not as strict as some of them seem to be.
Keep on producing these great books. I know it's not something I could ever do. Keeping characters, plots, etc, straight from one page to another is hard work - I'll take the easy way and enjoy your work. thanks.

    1. That's very kind of you, Mary -- thank you. I have not yet had the pleasure of reading either Kathi's or Mary Anne's books, but I certainly intend to. They both sound wonderful. Before my contract with Berkley, I wrote whenever I could. Once I had to produce three books on a deadline, I really kicked my writing schedule into third gear! The good news is that I will be officially retired from my day gig in November, and that leaves my schedule open full time for writing!

      Delete
    2. Thank you! It is difficult keeping up with the characters. I have a three ring binder for just the characters in my books. I don't want to have the same names and characteristics for one-timers and I want the repeat cast to always look the same. I do write full-time but life has a tricky way of disrupting my schedule. :)

      Delete
  14. Thank you Mary. I publish 15 books in a year so I very much write on a schedule of sorts. Writing is my full time job for me and you will find me at my computer for 40 or more hours per week. What is nice about writing as a job is that I can do it whenever and wherever I want and I often will take my laptop to the beach to write during the summer.

  15. From all your series which is your favorite character and why?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have only two series, but Talia Marby in the Deep Fried series is my favorite protagonist. I love her upbeat way of handling strife, and her devotion to her family and friends.

      Delete
    2. This is my third attempt to answer this and for some reason it doesn't look like it is posting. I signed out and back in so maybe this time? If the others did post and I just can't see them sorry for the repetition.

As for a favorite character it is hard to say. They are all part of me and I cherish each of them. Tj is a teacher who is very involved with the teens she coaches and I used to be a teacher who had a class full of teens that liked to hang out before school and at lunch. Caitlin is a tomboy with a doggy best friend who is outdoorsy and athletic and loves the ocean, much like me. Alyson is an intelligent high school student with close friends who she is willing to be involved with and go out on a limb for. Still, if I had to choose, I guess I'd choose Zoe. Zoe is what I like to refer to as "perfectly imperfect." She has a huge heart and is always willing to leap into the fray, but she can also be an emotional mess at times. In other words she is a bit of a spaz. She isn't as mature and confident as the others, and at times she lets her petty emotions get the best of her. Still in the end, she lets her heart lead and somehow always comes through. Zoe has matured a lot as the series has progressed and I find that I am anxious to see where she ends up.

    3. I'm a new author. I have one series, The Charlie McClung Mysteries. My favorite character is Ma, Charlie's mother. Thank you for your question.

    1. Tough question, with all those great writers out there. If I limit my answer to cozy authors, I'd say Ellery Adams, Lorna Barrett, and Jenn McKinlay. All are fabulous.

      Delete
    2. Oh, that's a hard question. I love Anne Perry, Caroline Graham, Elizabeth Peters, and Gretchen Archer, just to name a few. You can't beat Agatha Christie.Thank you for your question. :)

      Delete
    3. I am asked that often and I have to say that I honestly don't have a single favorite author. Most of the time my favorite author of the moment will be the last author I read that really stuck with me. I do have a lot of books by Debbie Macomber, Marie Ferrarella, Barbara Delinsky, and Laveryl Spencer. Oh and I used to love Kathleen Woodiwiss.

      Delete
  17. Linda Reilly how did you come up with the overall settinng for Fillet of Murder?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the concept of fish and chips made me think of merry old England. I visited England a number of times back in the 1980s, and was enthralled by charming countryside and the villages that dotted it. It felt like stepping into an Agatha Christie book -- I loved it that much. So I decided to create my own English village right there in the heart of the Berkshires. In my head, I can picture it so clearly. I used a real town for the concept, but called it a different name and made the setting my own.

      Delete
  18. My question is for all three authors. If you could bring one of your characters to our world, which one would it be and why?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'd bring Bea Lambert to life. She's the darling, sixty-something woman with springy black curls who originally hired a teenaged Talia to work in the fish and chips shop. She is so kind and caring -- the world would be a gentler place with more people like Bea!

      Delete
    2. Ma, Charlie's mother, because she is funny, a great cook, and loves everyone.

      Delete
    3. If I could bring one of my characters to life it would be Zak. We all need a Zak in our lives. He is intelligent, confident, patient, and caring, and he loves with his whole heart.

  19. Question for Kathi: Did you start out writing books in first person or third, and even though you write in both styles, do you prefer one over the other?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Although I am just now publishing the Seacliff High series, I actually wrote it about 5 years ago before I wrote Zoe or anything else. Before I was a writer I was a reader and I used to prefer 3rd person narrative which is why I chose this for the first series I wrote. Since I have been writing and publishing the past year and a half, I find that I really enjoy first person much more. I find that it feels a bit more real to me when the character can actually speak to the reader directly. The Zoe Donovan Series and the Whales and Tails Series are both first person and I find that my readers tend to connect to Zoe and Cait in a way that they may not with Tj and Alyson who are both written in the 3rd person.

    2. Kathi I love both TJ and Zoe!

  20. Question for all authors: Is it hard for you to figure out the clues/red herrings that you are going to place throughout the story? I am starting to plot out a story now, and I think the clues are going to give me the hardest time.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For me, it's quite hard. I found that as time has gone by, though, I'm getting better at it. Surprisingly, the best red herrings and clues pop up in the manuscript when you least expect them to. I think it's a result of the unconscious mind working overtime while your conscious mind rests.

      Delete
    2. Good question! Yes, you must have plausible red herrings and clues. I find that as the story develops, the red herrings and clues fall into place. They sometimes pop into my head as I shower, great place to let your mind wander around. Thank you for your question.

      Delete
    3. It's not hard because I don't figure them out ahead of time. I just follow my characters around as they try to figure out who did what and why. It's like I will be writing a scene and one of the characters will say, "What about this," and I'll realize that is a perfect direction to head next. And yes, I have gotten to the end of a book (Last couple chapters) and I don't know who did it and I can get tense but then it pops in my head and I realize who did it, and most times the clues are all there nicely lined up. I have, a time or two, gone back and dropped clues into the story once I know who the killer is. I hate it when the killer comes out of nowhere and there was no way for the reader to figure it out. In my mind the perfect mystery is one that keeps you guessing until the end but once you know who it is you think "Of course. I should have seen that all along."

  21. Where is your favorite setting? elliotbencan(at)hotmail(dot)com

    ReplyDelete

    1. My favorite setting is the hometown of Marian. She lives in a small town in Georgia during the early 1980s, a time and place I'm very familiar with. Charlie's hometown is in Virginia, nice little town. It's my second favorite. All of the settings are figments of my imagination. Thank you for your question.

      Delete
    2. I live in Lake Tahoe and I spend a lot of time at the ocean, which is just a short drive from Tahoe, so all of my series are set either at the ocean or in the mountains. I love both and I think I know both well enough to share what I love about these locations with my readers.

    3. My favorite setting would be in the Berkshires, where I grew up.

  23. For all authors. How do you research the different books? Is it time consuming? Do you travel? saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com

    Replies
    1. I have great resources, a medical examiner, FBI agent, retired Chief of Police, doctors, nurses, just to name a few. I'm not shy asking them questions. Lucky for me, they LOVE helping me. The internet is a fabulous resource. Since my books are set during the 1980s, I have to verify if things, songs, and movies did exist. Like bread makers did NOT nor cell phones or PCs. My third book is set on a cruise ship because my husband and I love to cruise, so I am very familiar with it. I did take few liberties with personnel and duties. But it's fiction, right? LOL Thank you for your question.

      Delete
    2. All my series are set in places I am familiar with so overall I don't really have to research setting. I have traveled for specific books. Zoe has been to both Hawaii and Alaska and I actually wrote both Maui Madness and Alaskan Alliance on location. Next up she will be visiting a haunted castle in Ireland and a haunted winery in upstate New York. I hope to make the trip to both locations in the fall. As for the details that might pop up in the books, I use Google a lot and I also have professionals in my life that I can bounce things off of.

      Delete
    3. Neat to know Zoe is going to Ireland and NY-why are both places haunted? Sounds like I will enjoy the new places.

      Delete
  24. It's surprising how much research you can do these days on the internet. God bless Google! My Deep Fried series is set in an area I'm totally familiar with and that I visit all the time, so travel isn't involved. I had to research things like how to operate a deep fryer, where to buy restaurant supplies, etc. I was able to watch a very helpful You Tube video of a chef making deep-fried haddock.

  25. I have 2 questions: 1) How did each of you find your cover artists? They are some of the best? 2) In a comment yesterday, an author referred to something as an author's STET. What is that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you! The first two covers were designed by a friend, Jasmin Woodworth. These were her first and only two book covers she has ever designed. The third book cover was designed by Michael James Canales. Sorry, but I'm not familiar with STET.

      Delete
    2. I started off by designing and developing my own covers using GIMP. When I was working on Haunted Hamlet I was having a hard time merging multiple graphics so that they appeared to be one image, so I posted on Facebook and one of my fans (Jessica Fischer) responded that she liked to mess around with Photo Shop and was willing to help. She did an amazing job and we have been working together ever since. I still design the covers and come up with the concept and overall look, but she is the one that gets everything to blend and look pretty. I basically just tell her what I am looking for and she makes it work.

      Delete
    3. Oh and I don't know what STET is.

      Delete
    4. I actually just Googled the word STET. It is an editing notation that means "leave as it stands" when an editor makes a notation and then wants to retract it. Wikipedia says: “. . .used by proofreaders and editors to instruct the typesetter or writer to disregard a change the editor or proofreader had previously marked.”

      Delete
    5. I didn't have to find my own cover artist because my publisher takes care of that. In my opinion, they do a fine job. The level of detail in their art work is impressive.

      Delete
    6. STET, that's right, Linda. I remember my husband telling me that. I've got a memory like a colander.

  36. Ok so I have another question for all of the authors, what is the inspiration for your chacters? Are all of your characters based loosely on you, or someone you know/knew? Or are some just 100% made up?

    1. My characters aren't based on anyone exactly but I do think there are pieces of people I know within the characters. It is not that I sit there and think, "Gee I'll base a character on my Great Aunt Greta," but I might write a character and then go back and read it and think, "That reminds me of Aunt Greta." Each of my four main protagonists, Tj, Zoe, Cait, and Alyson, do contain a little piece of me. Having said that, they are still very much their own people as well.

    2. I want to thank everyone for stopping by today and asking questions! You all had such great questions, and I enjoyed the online chat. I will shortly be drawing two names, one for a signed copy of Fillet of Murder, and one for the whimsical fish pin. Good luck, all!

    3. Mymain characters are very loosely based on people I know. Minor or one time appearance characters are totally made up.

  37. There's actually a bit of me in both my protagonists, but I strive to make them stronger, braver and more resourceful than I am! And younger! Most of my characters, however, are really just made up people.

  41. It always amazes me when I go anywhere that have books. I see so many different authors who write in so many genres. Where do you get your inspiration and ideas? How do you keep on writing book after book?

    2. I chose the Berkshires because I was raised there, and know the beauty of the area. In the fall it is simply spectacular, but I love the Berkshires year round! Thank you for commenting.
