Shelley's Reviews

Death by Coffee by Alex Erickson

Series: Bookstore Cafe Mysteries
Mass Market Paperback: 320 pages
Publisher: Kensington (May 26, 2015)
Language: English

When Krissy Hancock and her best friend Vicki decide to open a bookstore cafĂ© in their new town of Pine Hills, they decide to call it "Death by Coffee," after Krissy’s father’s most famous mystery novel. Little do they know how well the name fits…

On their very first day of business, Brendon Lawyer huffily takes his coffee…to the grave. It seems he had a severe allergy to peanuts…but how could there have been nuts in his coffee? And who stole his emergency allergy medication?

Fortunately, Krissy’s love of puzzles and mysteries leads her not only to Officer Paul Dalton, but also to many of her new neighbors, who aren’t terribly upset that the book is closed on Brendon. But one of them is a killer, and Krissy needs to read between the lies if she wants to save her new store—and live to see how this story ends…

This is a great start to the Bookstore Cafe series.I loved it and couldn't put it down. Krissy loves to solve puzzles and mystery's that she reads but when it hits close to home in her cafe she is ready for real life sleuthing. When Brendon Lawyer is killed in what looks like peanuts in his coffee from Death by Coffee's cafe Krissy takes charge to find out what happened and who the killer is before some one else dies.

The story line is great and a cast of characters so well developed, you will be pulled in from the start and at the end you will want more. I am excited for this series and am eagerly waiting to see what Krissy will get her self into in Death by Tea.

Chef Maurice and the Wrath of Grapes by JA Lang

Print Length: 274 pages
Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited >br /> Publisher: Purple Panda Press (July 13, 2015)
Publication Date: July 13, 2015

In the rarefied world of wine collecting, murder isn’t exactly a barrel of laughs…

An invitation to dinner at the home of renowned wine collector Sir William Burton-Trent soon finds Chef Maurice in the middle of an all-too-real murder mystery party, when Sir William is found dead in his own wine cellar.

The guests are acting all innocent, but which one is only playing the part? The pushy Californian film director? The seductive French winemaker? Or could it be, against all narrative decency, the butler who did it?

With the help of food critic friend Arthur Wordington-Smythe, a large kipper sandwich, and the newly formed Cochon Rouge Wine Appreciation Society, Chef Maurice must get to the bottom of matters before events turn decidedly sour…

This laugh out loud funny book will keep you reading till the end. Chef Maurice is at it again when he finds a body in the wine celler. He will have to do everything he can to find out who the killer is before things go from bad to worse. You will be captivated from the first page with a cast of characters so well developed and a brilliant story line. Humor, wit, and murder will keep you coming back for more. I am eagerly waiting for the next one.
